First things first. Let’s clarify the difference between fake eyelash strips and eyelash extensions. Fake eyelash strips—or “falsies” as they’ve come to be known—can be purchased at a drug store or beauty supply shop and applied at home. However, it does take some time to get used to applying your own false eyelashes.Our spa does offer false eyelash application for special events and occasions. However, they are not for retail. The time commitment is about 5 to 8 minutes in the chair and they will look great after applied by one of our experienced professionals. False eyelash strips will not damage your natural lashes, and we include the cost of the lashes in the application fee.
Eyelash extensions, however, are different than “falsies.” These are applied by a clinical professional, one lash at a time. Each eyelash extension is carefully glued to your natural lashes. This one-lash-at-a-time application process is in contrast to applying a strip of falsies to your eyelid in one fell swoop. Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent—they can last as long as six weeks with the proper care, but generally we recommend coming in for fillers every 2-4 weeks, and no longer.
Something to keep in mind, if you have weak or very fine lashes, they may not be able to support a thick extension. Eyelash extensions may fall out much faster in this case. But don’t worry, we’ll assess the strength of your natural lashes before recommending an extension style!
Now…down to the nitty gritty. Material. Size. Density. Dos and do nots…
There are three main types of lash extensions that you’ll see at spas: mink, natural, and synthetic. The mink ones are often used by celebrities (get a good look at Beyoncé’s eyes the next time you see her on TV) and are more lightweight than other options. Mink lashes may be glamorous, but a comparably glamorous look can be achieved with natural and synthetic lashes, too. However, mink lashes are soft and very natural looking. They are available at our spa for an additional fee.
Synthetic lashes involve a slightly faster application process, and will also give you the option of having long and glamorous extensions or more natural looking lashes. You can go thick and voluminous or just get a subtle boost; you can go wild and curly or spanned like a butterfly wing. Eyelash extensions range from 6mm to 17mm in length, and can be applied as a full set, a filler set to keep your lash extensions looking amazing week after week, or just on the outside corners, making every “wink” count.
The application process typically takes two hours, once you’ve chosen the nature of the lash extensions you want. If you have allergies or sensitivities, please let your aesthetician know so they may suggest the most appropriate products for you. Once you have your beautiful lashes applied, refrain from using water, steam and oil-based products for at least 12 to 24 hours, and preferably for two full days. If you wish to use mascara as well, it is recommended that you apply it only to the tips to prevent clumping. However, wearing makeup and using makeup removers will likely cause lash extensions to shed a bit faster. For all the stomach sleepers out there, try to adjust your sleeping position to your back for ultimate care of your new semi-permanent lash extensions. We do sell sleeping masks for eyelash extension guests—the masks will help extend the lifespan of your extensions, and our customers have had great success with them! A little extra protection can go a long way! The extensions themselves will begin to fall out naturally with your eyelash growth cycle, preventing damage to your own lashes.
