Healthy Hair Starts at the Scalp: 5 Tips to a Healthier Scalp

10/5/2019

Picture
A gorgeous head of hair has always been a steadfast and attracting feature: men and women alike continually search for ways to maintain smooth, healthy and natural-looking locks. One infallible way to a healthy head of hair starts from beneath…at the scalp. Our hair is simply an extension of the scalp, so it only makes sense that the first step to healthy, shiny hair is being more conscious of scalp care.

Below you will find 5 tips to achieving a healthier scalp that will only add a few minutes to your normal hair care routine.

1. pH balance is BIG
Believe it or not, your scalp has a pH range that denotes its health. A pH of between 4 and 5 is ideal. Maintaining your scalp’s target pH allows for better moisture retention, because the hair follicles open when the environment is too alkaline, causing your hair to dry out. Acidity, on the other hand, closes the follicles, allowing them to lay flat and welcome in moisture.

Another advantage to cultivating a healthy pH range is that it acts as a natural detangler, and prevents the formation of harmful bacteria. Ask your stylist for hair product recommendations, as some shampoos and conditioners can disrupt your scalp’s pH level. Search for the “Goldilocks” of hair care products: not too acidic, not too alkali…just right.

2. Lock in Natural Oils and Moisture
Your scalp naturally produces an oil called sebum, without which your hair and scalp will dry out and become less controllable. Think increased frizz, breakage, and other forms of damage that can occur without the consistent retention of moisture.

How to maintain your natural oils:

  • • Try not to wash your hair too often; ask your stylist how often you should wash your hair based on its texture and condition
  •  • Consider adding supplements like fish oil to your diet, and make sure you eat plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids, which come from such foods as nuts, salmon and avocado
  •  • Moisturize with coconut or tea tree oils

Product Recommendation: Oribe Serene Scalp Balancing Conditioner

3. Exfoliation: It’s Not Just for the Skin You Can See
It’s important to exfoliate your scalp weekly, to rid it of dead skin cells, dirt, and/or excess hair products. When the pores on your scalp stay clogged for too long, you’re more likely to develop issues like dandruff, itchiness, and irritation. Using a gentle exfoliant can prevent these problems from occurring and disrupting your healthy hair growth.

Product Recommendation: Bumble & Bumble Scalp Detox

4. Scalp Massage for Shiny, Strong Hair
Massaging your scalp helps increase blood circulation to that area, and a better blood flow brings more oxygen and nutrients to your hair follicles—nutrients that are essential for healthy hair growth. Consider massaging your scalp with oils (coconut and tea tree are two great options) to keep the skin and hair roots well-hydrated and strong!

5. Protect Your Scalp
You can cause damage to your scalp in a variety of ways, including UV radiation from the sun, harsh chemicals, and extreme temperatures. Therefore, it’s important to invest in quality shampoos, conditioners and products that prevent against these damaging elements. Your stylist can recommend the appropriate products for your unique needs.

Steps to protecting your scalp:

  • • When you are going to be exposed to a significant amount of sunlight, protect your scalp and hair with a hat of your choice!
  • • Avoid showering in very hot water, or exposing your skin to excessively cold temperatures
  • • Limit chemical treatments, or ask your stylist if an alternative hair treatments may yield similar results with less damage

How do you know if your scalp is standing between you and a head of healthy, shiny hair? Some indications of an unhealthy scalp include:
  • • Dry & Itchy. If your scalp is dry and itchy, shampooing less frequently and/or switching to a different shampoo might help. We also recommend adding a quick moisturizing routine to your weekly hair care routing to increase hydration.
  • • Dandruff. Dandruff can be the sign of minute infections, build-up of hair products, clogged hair follicles, or even hormonal changes. Ask your stylist how to best combat dandruff—everyone is different!

Skincare—whether your face, body or scalp—is an important aspect of your overall health. It’s your first defense against infection, protects you from dangerous elemental factors, and regulate your body’s temperature. The appearance of the skin is said to be a tell-tale sign of a persons’ state of health, and your scalp is no different. The simplest way to healthy, shining locks is through scalp-care.

5 Tips to Tame the Frizz & Keep Your Hair Shiny, Silky & Smooth

Picture
As we make our way through the summer months, taking advantage of the warmer temperatures and spending long hours at the beach or cooling off at the local pool, our hair may be suffering in silence. The combination of sun-dried tresses and constant sweat can take our “normal” flyaways and frizz to a whole new level. Tame the frizz with these 5 summer-friendly hair tips.

5 Tips to Tame Frizzy Hair

Moisturize Your Scalp

Frizz develops when your hair follicles search for moisture, so get ahead of the frizz and give your strands the hydration they need while you’re in the shower. Make sure to choose shampoos and conditioners that provide a natural hydrating agents, like coconut oil, argan oil, or shea butter.

Avoid Shampooing Everyday

In combination with the above, avoid shampooing your hair daily, as this may strip your hair of its natural oils causing it to dry out and become quite brittle. Ask your stylist whether it’s appropriate for you to switch to sulfate-free products, as some sulfates can be rough on your strands and contribute to drying them out over time. When it comes to your hair there is such a thing as too clean!

Dry your Hair with a Microfiber Towel
Taking a microfiber towel to your hair after the shower in lieu of the cotton one you typically use on the rest of your body may be the small miracle you’ve been searching for. Hair follicles swell when they are in prolonged contact with water molecules, so the idea is to get as much water off your head as fast as possible—while creating the least amount of friction. Hence, a highly absorbent and non-fluffy microfiber towel will make a huge difference.

Sleep on a Silk Pillowcase

Looking for a quick fix? Trade your comfy cotton pillowcase for a silk one. Your cotton pillowcase steals the moisture from your hair as you snooze, plus, with cotton, it causes friction every time you toss or turn throughout the night—friction that may cause damage to your hair cuticles and increase your chances of waking up with a head full of frizz. Silk pillowcases result in dramatic results overnight, perfect if you are in immediate need of flyaway taming. Plus, who doesn’t enjoy feeling like a queen sleeping on a shiny, satin pillow!

Kerastase Hair Treatments
Beyond making changes to the way you care for your hair on a daily basis, indulge in a salon service designed to tame frizz and flyaways. Kerastase hair treatments from the Fusio-Dose™ Hair Lab is a system that uses freshly-fused and concentrated active ingredients to create a customized treatment designed to match your specific hair needs. It is a simple solution to flyaways with a transformation that you see happen right in front of you. Voilà, long-lasting frizz-free hair…immediately!

Call our salon today to schedule your appointment for a Kerastase hair treatment, the perfect add-on to your next cut, blowout or styling service. Time to say goodbye to frizz, for good!

Collaboration & Customization: The Cornerstones of Hair Care & Styling

“I had a new client come in—we gave her a color transformation and a new set of extensions. While matching her for her extensions, we realized that just one extension brand couldn’t give her what she was looking for. We needed to order hair from two different companies and combine them...the result was incredible! Everyone who walked by commented on how amazing the colors were. While talking to another stylist, she asked what I had used for color on her natural hair. She had seen the client the day she came in for her consultation and recognized the major change in her before and after looks. I explained everything I used, and, as I was telling her, I realized how truly custom we create each client's look. Her color alone took three different color brand's products, and then two extension brands, as well, and another three companies for styling products!

"If we were tied down to any one company, we would never have been able to create that look, nor would it have been in the best interest of the client. The client was in love with her new style, and really felt like she had something one-of-a-kind created for her...because she did! But this is just a typical example of how we service our clients at Fisher Experience..."

***

This is just one example of how our stylists go above and beyond for their clients. But it's more than just going above and beyond—it's a matter of servicing the client before servicing our business partners. It is extremely unique for a salon not to be bound by contract to certain vendors. Mixing brands—whether colors, hair extensions, or styling products—is a bold approach in the beauty world. However, our experienced and highly talented staff has perfected the art of blending haircare brands when it’s in the best interest of the client. And we can only do this because our clients—not our vendors—are our #1 priority. This is reflected in our retail offerings, as well: we offer lines from three of the leading haircare brands to meet a wide variety of haircare and styling needs. No one brand is right for every person, and every circumstance!

There is an art and a science to "bending the rules," and our stylists know how to toe that line with grace.

“We had an extension guest recently who was very thin on top due to a prescription medication she was taking. We chose to install extensions on the top of her head, though this is generally not the way extensions work. We changed her part to disguise them, and it worked very well—the guest was exceedingly pleased. Not only did this satisfy our client's fashion needs, but it also met her budgetary requirements—it was a very cost-effective solution.”

We look outside of the box to achieve the look our clients desire. We have tested the limits and know exactly where the line is—creating the look you have in mind, no matter how unconventional, is exciting for us! We'll do what it takes to achieve the look you want...if anyone can make it happen, it's our team.

Speaking of our team, that is another thing that makes Fisher Experience so unique. Our team members do not work in silos, coveting the lessons they've learned through experience. Our team is just that: a team. They work together, consult with each other, share formulas and promote camaraderie...both inside and outside of the salon. They strive to motivate, educate, and assist each other, which creates the best possible experience for our clients.

Fisher Experience has been one of the South Shore's leading hair salons and day spas for decades, and it's because of the way we approach client service that we have made such a name for ourself. If you are ready for a fresh perspective and a one-of-a-kind look, created just for you, call 781.849.1770 or email info@fisherexp.com to schedule a consultation with one of our incredibly talented and progressive stylists. We want you to achieve the look of your dreams, and our stylists are prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure exactly that!

Summertime Haircare | How to Protect and Treat Your Hair

When it comes to hair, we glamorize the summertime: the gorgeous sea salt texture; natural, sun-kissed highlights; and beach-blown waves. But, beautiful or not, summertime is actually one of the worst times of year for your hair. Between chlorine turning your hair green and the heat drying out your locks, the summer season can really take a toll on the health of your hair:
  • • Discoloration
  • • Dullness
  • • Dryness & Frizz
  • • Breakage
  • • And More…

But all hope is not lost. Here is your complete guide to protecting and treating your hair during the summer months!
Picture
USE SUMMERTIME-SPECIFIC PRODUCTS

During this time of year, you shouldn’t leave the house without SPF protection for hair, and the key is finding good, quality products made specifically for summer. We highly recommend the Kerastase Soleil sun protection line:

beautifying hair cream (UV filter) – is infused with Vitamin E, protects against dryness and breakage, as well as controlling all of that unwanted summer frizz.

revitalizing hair mask – locks in moisture to protect from sun-exposure, rebalances key nutrients, and improves your hair’s shine & while also smoothing its texture.

multi-purpose hair oil spray – this spray absorbs quickly, softens hair, and gives you sea salt waves…with zero crunch!

after-sun shampoo – helps to remove chlorine, salt, and sand, while restoring your hair’s shine and providing sun protection all at once.

WHAT'S TRENDING? HATS!

Summertime hair protection cues such styles as the floppy hat, straw-textured hats, and various colors of sun hats. These will not only keep you up to date with summer 2019 fashion trends, but will also give your hair the sun-protection it needs and deserves.

Rock that new sundress with a head-turning floppy hat and look hot while protecting your hair!
POST-BEACH CARE & STYLING TIPS

Knowing how to treat and style your hair after spending a day in the sun and sand is so important.

First, treat your hair with oil or a healthy dose of conditioner before you shampoo. Secondly, use a natural shampoo with moisturizing qualities—stay away from anything too harsh, as you want to keep your natural oils intact. Thirdly, consider investing in a high-quality leave-in conditioner that helps lock in healthy moisture for a prolonged period of time. Next, grab a detangling comb or brush your hair with your fingertips to minimize breakage before brushing. Finally, let your hair air-dry instead of using a blow dryer and/or heated styling product, as these styling props tend to dry out the hair.

HAIR TREATMENTS

Any blondes out there may have experienced the “green hair problem,” caused by that much-desired dip in your backyard pool…but what exactly causes this issue? Most people are under the impression that chlorine is the main culprit, but this is not entirely true. Chlorine and copper—which is found in various water sources—bond together to form a film that sticks to the proteins in your hair, causing it to turn green.

While undesirable, you can rest assured that this tint is not permanent. Fisher Experience recommends that swimmers treat the tips of their hair with conditioner prior to swimming in order to protect and prevent unnecessary drying. It is important to rinse your hair immediately afterwards, and then proceed to use a specialized shampoo and conditioner designed to remove chlorine and other damaging minerals from your hair.

Call 781.849.1770 or email info@fisherexp.com today to learn more about our swimmer-specific hair treatments available.

Otherwise, enjoy the paradise of summer to its fullest…just don’t forget to maintain the health of your hair in the meantime.
