5 Tips to Tame the Frizz & Keep Your Hair Shiny, Silky & Smooth

As we make our way through the summer months, taking advantage of the warmer temperatures and spending long hours at the beach or cooling off at the local pool, our hair may be suffering in silence. The combination of sun-dried tresses and constant sweat can take our “normal” flyaways and frizz to a whole new level. Tame the frizz with these 5 summer-friendly hair tips.
 
5 Tips to Tame Frizzy Hair

 
Moisturize Your Scalp

Frizz develops when your hair follicles search for moisture, so get ahead of the frizz and give your strands the hydration they need while you’re in the shower. Make sure to choose shampoos and conditioners that provide a natural hydrating agents, like coconut oil, argan oil, or shea butter.
 
Avoid Shampooing Everyday

In combination with the above, avoid shampooing your hair daily, as this may strip your hair of its natural oils causing it to dry out and become quite brittle. Ask your stylist whether it’s appropriate for you to switch to sulfate-free products, as some sulfates can be rough on your strands and contribute to drying them out over time. When it comes to your hair there is such a thing as too clean!
 
Dry your Hair with a Microfiber Towel
Taking a microfiber towel to your hair after the shower in lieu of the cotton one you typically use on the rest of your body may be the small miracle you’ve been searching for. Hair follicles swell when they are in prolonged contact with water molecules, so the idea is to get as much water off your head as fast as possible—while creating the least amount of friction. Hence, a highly absorbent and non-fluffy microfiber towel will make a huge difference.

​“I had a new client come in—we gave her a color transformation and a new set of extensions. While matching her for her extensions, we realized that just one extension brand couldn’t give her what she was looking for. We needed to order hair from two different companies and combine them...the result was incredible! Everyone who walked by commented on how amazing the colors were. While talking to another stylist, she asked what I had used for color on her natural hair. She had seen the client the day she came in for her consultation and recognized the major change in her before and after looks. I explained everything I used, and, as I was telling her, I realized how truly custom we create each client's look. Her color alone took three different color brand's products, and then two extension brands, as well, and another three companies for styling products! 

"If we were tied down to any one company, we would never have been able to create that look, nor would it have been in the best interest of the client. The client was in love with her new style, and really felt like she had something one-of-a-kind created for her...because she did! We changed her part to disguise them, and it worked very well—the guest was exceedingly pleased. Not only did this satisfy our client's fashion needs, but it also met her budgetary requirements—it was a very cost-effective solution.”

Self-Care: The Antidote to Stress that You So Deserve

Stress is real. It is our body’s reaction to change, and the response can be physical, emotional,
or neurological. It is a very normal part of our lives, and is a natural instinct that manifests when
our body identifies the need to protect itself. Although these reactions typically come and go,
prolonged stress may be damaging to our mental and physical health. And, from new mothers
to working women trying to do it all, prolonged anxiety and stress is more common than ever.

Women accomplish a lot on a daily basis. We hold high-stress jobs, care for our children,
maintain our households, and work to keep our relationships healthy—with partners, friends and
family. Wonder Woman has nothing on today’s modern woman. But being expected to handle
all of this at once may actually be a foundational source of stress. The best way for women to
better equip themselves to handle stress is by dedicating a few hours each week to self-care—it
can make a huge difference.

Here are 3 simple ways to practice self-care, to ensure you are your best self in order to excel at
all you are responsible for, every day.

1. Alter Your Perspective

It sounds cliché, but a lot of our stress comes from the way we perceive a circumstance. You
can make the choice to view your situation as a challenge, rather than as a catastrophe. You
can choose to see an opportunity where a threat once stood. Once you believe there is no
danger, your body’s “fight or flight” response will be deactivated. If you put this idea into
practice, the less likely you will feel the effects of life’s stressors. Look into cognitive
restructuring if you need a place to begin.

2. Adopt These Daily Stress-Relieving Habits

Get ahead of the downward stress spiral by picking up a few natural, stress-relieving habits, like
exercising, journaling, and meditation. Exercise is said to naturally boost your feel-good
hormones, which make this activity a great method for combating stress. Another simple option
is to start a journal. Make it a goal to write for 10 to 15 minutes in the morning, before the
craziness of the day, or at night, before you go to bed. Meditation, in as little as 10 minutes per
day, will keep your mind clear, refreshed and ready for the day. The key is learning to
disassociate yourself from that endless to-do-list.

3. Take Part in Regular Talk-Therapy Sessions

Sometimes partaking in therapy regularly can help us gain an outside perspective on life and
relieve stress by openly discussing your thoughts and feelings. Therapy can be like a massage
for the brain that relaxes and eases the mind into serenity. Think about giving mindfulness-
based cognitive therapy a try, it teaches you awareness of your thoughts and allows you to
control your positive and negative reactions more readily. Essentially, therapy can provide the
stress-relief you need to take the best care of yourself.

4. Indulge in Regular Spa Services

Massages, pedicures and facials, oh my!
Another way to practice self-care is to partake in weekly or monthly doses of TLC. For a person
who spends most of their time and energy making other people happy—bosses, children,
partners, friends and family—indulging a little personal rejuvenation can do wonders for the
soul. Schedule a relaxing CBD oil massage to calm the mind and ensnare the senses, or a full-
on pampering session with your best friend, complete with pedicures and a luxurious facial.

Flip Flop Ready Feet, Forever: Tips to Make Your Spa Pedicure Last

Summer is here and it’s time to get those feet flip flop ready. Splurge on some professional pampering, and enjoy a spa pedicure at Fisher Experience. We offer an award-winning spa pedicure that is as rejuvenating for the feet as it is for the mind. We recommend indulging in a pedicure every 3-4 weeks, but there are several ways you can prolong your pedicure and keep it looking gorgeous in between appointments. Here are a few salon-recommended tips to do just that: 

1. One of the simplest things you can do is re-apply topcoat every 7-10 days. This will help with premature lifting of the edges and keep that newly pedicured shine. Be careful not to create too many layers, as it can potentially create the opposite problem!

2. Moisturize your feet, toes and cuticles. After towel drying your feet, grab a high-quality bottle of cuticle oil and unscented lotion to give your feet and nails the moisture they need.

3. A pumice stone can be a great tool for keeping your feet healthy and smooth. It helps to rid them of callouses, and the wear and tear of the especially active lifestyle that so many people adopt during the summer months. 

4. Stay hydrated! We all know that staying hydrated is healthy—essential for optimal functionality in all areas of our body. But did you know that dehydration can have detrimental effects on your nail strength? Hydrating is important inside and out; it keeps our nails from becoming brittle—which can decrease the lifespan of your pedicure! 

5. Consider finding a comfy pair of socks to wear around the house while you’re not out showing off your toes. A soft pair of socks can be the perfect barrier to chipping your nail polish, and can also keep your exfoliated heels feeling smooth and moisturized for longer.

Things to avoid or minimize in order to maintain your pedicure:

1. Immediately after your pedicure, try kicking up your feet, relaxing, and binge watching your favorite Netflix series. I know this may be difficult with your busy schedule. However, try to plan your nail appointments when you DO have the time. If you want to maximize the life of your new pedi, then consider it a must-do. 

2. Do your best to minimize chlorine exposure, when possible, as it may cause unwanted fading and cracking. Plus, chlorine can dry out your feet, cuticles, skin, and hair.

3. Avoid water or steam for 12-24 hours. Your polish may feel dry as you walk out of the salon, but it actually takes about 12 to 24 hours to fully harden. 

Your beautiful pedicure is not made to last forever, but you may be able to extend its life and quality by following the tips above. Give them a try!
