The first thing you need to remember is that your natural hair oils will not reach the tips of your hair extensions—daily brushing is an absolute must, as well as using natural products that will hydrate and strengthen your strands. Ask your stylist to recommend products especially for your type of hair extension.
Now, let’s talk about how to maintain human hair extensions...
How to Care for Natural Human Hair Extensions
Let’s start with the basics: shampoo. Human hair extensions should only be washed with sulfate- and/or paraben-free shampoos…just on the roots! We love Bumble & Bumble’s Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Sulfate Free Shampoo, but your stylist may recommend a different product for your needs.
If you usually wash your hair at night, make sure you dry it full it, brush it gently, and maybe even dry braid it before going to bed.
Like your own natural hair, human hair extensions can be damaged by the sun and chlorine. During the hot, summer months, wear a hat when you can…and anytime you go for a refreshing dip in the pool, make sure you rinse out the chlorine as soon as possible. Ask us about a Kerastase hair treatment designed specifically to dechlorinate the hair.
Hair extensions are fairly low-maintenance—they require cleansing, conditioning and detangling, just like our own natural hair. However, unlike our own natural hair, hair extensions have a shelf life of about 3-months at the very most (though we recommend coming in for maintenance appointments about every 6-weeks to keep your hair extensions looking fresh). Taking proper care of your hair extensions can keep those extensions looking fabulous for far longer.
