1. Scour the Internet
“Ask the Oracle,” if you will. Google is a great place to start. Search for stylists in your area that specialize in the look you’re hoping to achieve, whether you’re looking for a smooth-transitioning balayage, a natural-looking auburn color to make your eyes pop, or a rock-star pixie cut that is certain to turn heads. Take a look at the salon reviews and make a point to find the stylist that has experience working with your current hair type, texture and cut.
2. Ask Around
Word of mouth is a more powerful tool than you realize. If you see a style, cut or color that piques your fancy, then ask the person what salon they go to, and who they see. As their name, too, so you can tell the stylist who referred them! Having a reference point for the stylist also gives them an idea of the style you are looking for.
3. Take Advantage of Social Media
If you’re not 100% set on a specific color or cut, take a look at Instagram. Salons and hair stylists are always sharing photos of their latest creations. You may come across a must-have look, and gain a better grasp on what each stylist’s specialty is.
4. Bring Photos to Your Consultation
If you have a specific concept in your head, the best way to get this across to the stylist you’ve selected is to bring them a photo, or show them a photo on your phone. Once you point out what you like about the style, your hairdresser will be able to give their recommendations. Your stylist should explain whether or not the cut will work with your hair’s texture and the shape of your face. They may suggest modifications to improve the way that cut works for you as an individual. If you have your own little personal touches that you’d like to use to make the style your own, let the stylist know! We can’t speak for other salons, but at Fisher Experience, our stylists love putting a personal touch on a classic style!
5. Learn the Terminology
Lastly, before meeting with your chosen stylist for a consultation, it’s helpful to educate yourself and learn some salon terminology. You would not travel to another country without a few words up your sleeve to increase your chances of effective communication. The same concept applies at the hair salon. There is less chance for misunderstanding when you speak the same language. Of course, a skilled stylist will be happy to explain what’s what during your consultation, but it’s always easier to start “ahead of the game” with a solid foundation of hair styling knowledge. Bringing a photo is also helpful when learning to speak salon, as you may look at a photo and think, “I like the balayage look here,” but a stylist may recognize that the look was achieved though foils. Photos help clarify wants and needs.
Stylists and salon professionals want you to look great and feel even better about your new style. Communication is vital for collaboration. Speak up, and you will walk out with a smile.
